Aihe on: ⋅ Topic of this workshop: Kirjoitus suunnittelu ⋅ Typeface Design Visual communication includes doubtless typografie as the balance and interplay of letterforms on the page. Digital font technology makes it easier for end-users to do text processing, typesetting and layout without sacrificing the typographic quality and logical correctness of the text. Using digital fonts is getting easier since the last 30 years, but developing them is more complex. In this workshop we will start from just drawing letters, to provide an insight into a type designers needs to know about encoding, hinting, layout features and various parameters that need to be set inside of a font. We will see behind the curtain of font formats from Type 1 font format, TrueType font format till todays Unicode Standard and using an digital font editor to develope your own typeface and the possibilities to enhance yourself independently.
We will start to design fonts with the software application »Fontographer«, working on Mac (it is also available for both Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh platforms). Later on we will get an insight of »FontLab Studio« (formerly FontLab), which is a font editor for professional type designers. In case you want to preview the features of the software tools, or you will continue your work after the course and you have further questions, please feel free to download the official »Font editor manuals«: For further reading of those typographic tools or to practice at home Muutama kysymys? ⋅ Any Questions?
